Discover – Develop - Dedicate
Find a time and place where you wont be interrupted. Turn off your cell phone! Take a sheet of paper and write the first thing that comes into your mind for each of the following questions:
- What activities or discussion topics make you lose track of time?
- What makes you feel good about yourself?
- What is the project you cant wait to get up in the morning to do? And why?
- Write down at least five of your life experiences that most gave you a sense of fulfilment. The things that make you feel “alive”.
- What did you want to do with your life when you were a teenager/ young adult? Did you have a passion to make a difference in the world, and if so, what was the core desire in that? If you were to pick that up again today, what shape would that take?
- What do people typically ask you for help in (irrespective of your roles)?
- If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
- What were some challenges, difficulties or hardships you’ve overcome or are in the process of overcoming? How did you do it?
- What causes do you strongly believe in or connect with?
- If you could get a message across to a large group of people, who would those people be? What would your message be?
- What are the qualities you admire most in other people, and why?
- What do others say about you that encourages or inspires them? (ask at least 2 people)
- Imagine you are 90 years old, sitting on a rocking chair on your porch! You are very happy and content with the wonderful life you’ve lived. Looking back over your life and all that you’ve achieved and acquired, all the relationships you’ve developed; what matters to you most? What is the legacy you want to leave? What do you want to be most remembered for? List them out.
Now that you’ve gone through these questions, look for patterns and common themes to your answers. Try and narrow it down, focus on the strongest themes, and work toward a conclusion you can state in one direct word or sentence.
If you have come to a conclusion, then you have discovered a passion that is God given, and has already had a strong impact on your life. That passion needs direction, and it may be helpful to discover the spiritual gift/s that go with that passion. But for now you have a good place to start the adventure of serving God and others through the grid of how He has wired you.
